Sharing?

Excuse me if this sounds stupid but is there anyway to share live yet? I'd prefer to share over here than HBP

Re: Sharing?

either you'll need a third party broadcasting program like butt or something, or there's no option yet. i couldn't get butt to work when hbp wanted it.

art of the heartbeat has tinychat. that doesn't need any third party stuff, so we should probably switch to that.

Re: Sharing?

Yeah, you can share. You do need an external tool like HBP does, for example butt or ffmpeg or mixxx or whatever you like as long as it supports streaming to icecast. Here's all the info you need.

server: heart2h.com
port: 8000 for "normal" or 8008 for SSL (recommended)
username: Your site username
password: Your site password
mount point: Your site username
codec/format: mp3

Re: Sharing?

I'd like to suggest AVChat (http://avchat.net/) as an option. HBNetwork was going to use it, then DarkArtek disappeared from his own site.

It take a good deal of configuration server-side and it's almost $200 for a 20 user limit plus a mobile version.

Re: Sharing?

That's a bit out of our price range, I'd prefer an open source solution if possible.

Re: Sharing?

I could easily host a discord server that can probably be linked here... but I think a few were made already.

that would be pretty cool...but i already use it and everyone would know the name i use on everything else. but i have been told the codec discord uses is superior to skype's (probably the only real thing it has on its competitor since you still need third party tools to save chats). i don't remember what it's called, but it's supposedly extremely clear. multiple voice channels for multiple shares, too. buuuut, no way to join a server under another user at the same time. so.

Re: Sharing?

I can vouch for Discord's audio quality. It's pretty good.

Re: Sharing?

I can also vouch for Discord's quality, very good and low latency. The mobile apps work very well too. Depending on how the server is set up, you can change your nickname specific to that server, but viewing the profile of that user still shows all of their information. At the moment, there is not a way to use a completely different identity or keep a separate profile depending on the server. Your only option to truly keep everything separate would be to have 2 separate accounts.

Re: Sharing?

I would suggest something other than Discord.

Firstly, it's centrally-hosted with no transparent explanation of how they're paying for all that "free" bandwidth. I suspect they make their money from data-harvesting & reselling it or they're trying to harvest a huge databank of user information to make the company tasty for a buyout from a giant like Facebook or Google.

Discord requires a site-wide login. For privacy reasons, that's a non-starter issue for many people here, especially women.

I would suggest a TeamSpeak (or Mumble) server instead. Hosting costs are ridiculously cheap from suppliers like typefrag.com. Can easily give guests ability to create their own temporary chat rooms, for either public or private sharing. Apps available for everything; Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android.
