Hurricanes

And here I thought hurricane season was supposed to be earlier in the summer. Seems like the south US is getting slammed though. Hope all of you are doing okay. <3

Nope. It starts in June and goes to November. Most of the more costly hurricanes this nation has seen - Andrew, Katrina, Wilma, Camille - are  during peak season. Peak season is roughly August to October. All of those names have been retired as a result. Really hoping that Irma doesn't do serious damage, even though it's done plenty in the Caribbean already.

Huh, TIL. Kinda makes me wonder, it really feels like we're getting slammed repeatedly by insane hurricanes. Is this year actually any worse or does it just feel that way because it's here and now?

It kinda just feels that way. The last few hurricane seasons have been about average with few landfalls from named storms. Usually a good way to tell how bad that year was is by seeing how many names were retired that season.

Last year, we retired Matthew and Otto. Year before that, Erika and Joaquin. 2014 - nothing.

All of the names I gave in my other post have been retired, except for Harvey (probably will be retired at the end of the season) and Irma (too early to tell at this point). If we retire two names, that's consistent with the last couple years.

2005 holds the record for most retired names at five (Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Stan, Wilma).
