What the heck, Aztecs?

You guys ever read up on their insane rituals? Just started this semester and halfway through the first chapter of my history book (which up until now has been pretty dry) I run into this bit:

They built and constantly rebuilt
and enlarged their Great Pyramid of the Sun. At its dedication in 1487, they sacrificed—
if we can believe later accounts—about 14,000 people in a ritual that went on for four days
until the priests dropped from exhaustion. Each captive climbed the steep steps of the
pyramid and was held by his wrists and ankles over the sacrificial slab while a priest cut
open his breast, ripped out his heart, held it up to the sun, placed it inside the statue of a
god, and then rolled the carcass down the steps so that parts of the body could be eaten,
mostly by members of the captor’s family, but never by the captor. He fasted instead and
mourned the death of a worthy foe.

14,000 people sacrificed with their hearts cut out and offered up to the gods. Holy crap that's metal.

Re: What the heck, Aztecs?

I thought that kind of ritual sacrifice that the Aztecs did was more or less just a myth?

Re: What the heck, Aztecs?

I'm sure there's a lot of myth around it but AFAIK they did actually do a lot of human sacrificing.

Whether or not its a myth depends on who you ask, I reckon. Some historians say its a myth, others believe there's some truth to the heart removing ritual. That said, if they did sacrifice people, it's never to the numbers you often here (From one book I read - which is one of a few, since I found that time period that interesting - they sacrificed one victim every 20 days in a typical year).

Not that I'd want to see anyone die but I would like to see a heart beating outside of the body

If I could see a beautiful woman heart beating outside of her chest I probably die of over-excitement LOL

Not a myth - but highly exaggerated!
