Hearty games

There was a tumblr post about this a while back but tumblr posts are so hard to find again once you let them out of sight.

So let's see, I think we came up with

Crypt of the Necrodancer - Roguelike game where the main character dies, gets resurrected by the big bad but her heart (along with everything else under the Necrodancer's control in this dungeon) beats and you can only move along with the music. It's got a little pixel heart beating away at the bottom along with the beat of the music. Really fun game, especially if you have like a dance mat or something.

Cadence - Small indie game over on itch.io. Really short. It's a platformer, but you can only see when your character's heart beats, leaving you blind to most of the level at a time. There are a few Let's Plays up on YouTube if you're into that I think.

I'm not sure what else we found, if anyone finds that Tumblr post lemme know.

Re: Hearty games

oh hey that's my tumblr!

it's also worth noting the vast multitude of games that play a heartbeat when your health is low (i.e Skyrim). my s.o used to tease me by letting himself almost die when I was distracted just to get a rise out of me, the dick. too bad I didn't bring my copy of skyrim up to college with me...

Re: Hearty games

Here is a bit of a list of hearts i found in games

The game Happy Wheels has a heart gib that still beats after the death of the character, the camera also follows the character's heart gib.

A still beating heart is a healing item in the PC game called Blood, also the second to last level on the last episode takes place in what appears to be a body, including a stomach, lungs, and ending in a pumping heart.

In Doom it is possible to find a still beating heart on top of a pedestal as a decoration in some maps(usually the hell maps).

Re: Hearty games

Zero Time Dilemma has an entire subplot revolving around a serial killer who removes/is obsessed with hearts. I'm not sure there's any way to just pick out the main scenes regarding it because of how the timeline/gameplay works in that game, though. It's not literally graphic as it's mostly a visual novel game, but it gets pretty intense and in-depth as part of a certain story branch.

Re: Hearty games

Can't say I've played many visual novels, but the story for Zero Time Dilemma sounds pretty cool. Too bad I don't have a DS or Vita right now. If I do pick one up, would it be worth it to get that?

Re: Hearty games

I remember the game Magic School Bus explores the Human Body there was a heart mini game in the form of pinball. Also let's not forget Surgeon Simulator 2013.

I believe the series is actually available on steam now as well!! At very least, Zero Time Dilemma is but you're REALLY better off playing the series in order if you can manage it. Or, if you have a PS4, all 3 games are available on that. Totally worth it imo, I've played through them all a few times and the stories are wild!

Ah, unfortunately I don't have any home consoles or I definitely would. The plot summary definitely makes it sound like a lot of fun.

I double checked and they are all on steam now (the first three bundled as The Nonary Games) but the price is pretty high for a series that's been out for quite a long time. Might be worth wishlisting waiting for a sale though!

Re: Hearty games

Never buy anything at full price on Steam. Put it on your wishlist and wait for it to go on sale. Everything goes on sale eventually.

Re: Hearty games

For people who like dark themes, Doki Doki Literature Club is a free-to-play visual novel with some big heart talk from one of the characters toward the tail-end of the game. Probably not many people's cup of tea from a purely heart-related aspect but a really damn good game if you like Eternal Darkness-style psychological horror. Best played without researching too much as reviews, by nature, tend to be incredibly spoilery.

Re: Hearty games

The pinball machines Gorgar and Iron Maiden (has nothing to do with the band, who are getting their own machine this year) have a heartbeat sound effect that plays in the background constantly during play. On Gorgar, the heartbeat speeds up the better you're doing, but resets after each ball.

Bride of Pin-Bot has a center ramp that plays a heartbeat sound effect whenever you send a ball through it. Also, when you complete the Bride's metamorphosis, the machine's display shows an EKG and a heartbeat sound effect is heard.

Re: Hearty games

Are there ANY games at all out there that are NOT anime, literature or RPG games that include a ton of heart related content or are based around a lot of heart related content like all of these anime RPG's seem to be? Sadly, the only ones that I can think of are Surgeon Simulator, The Legacy Interactive ER games, and a couple surgeon flash games. The rest are the obvious "low on health heartbeat sound effect" that is in just about every last generation and new generation video game known to mankind. For once, I'd like to play a heart related game where I don't have to click through a ton of pointless text while staring at emotionless still pictures of anime girls with unrealistic gigantic boobs and tye dye colored hair. I'd make my own games since I do have the programs to do so like Unity 3D and Daz3d, but I don't know how to code things.

Re: Hearty games

Back in 2013, there was a Global Game Jam session and the theme was "Sound of a heartbeat". There's a lot of indie games about the heart right here!

What a nice find, you should try some games up there!
