Skype alternatives

Hello dear friends

it has recently come to my attention that skype is a big steaming pile of crap, especially the mobile apps.

SO

I suggest we collectively move away from Skype and somewhere else. Riot seems like it might be a decent choice. It's got a clean look, a browser app and a decent app for mobile users, and AFAICT it's basically like an un-suckish skype.
Or maybe telegram, it also seems like it'd be a good choice although at the moment it sounds like actually calling people is in beta and isn't available to most of the world.

Any other alternative messaging/calling/video-ing services/apps?

There is a Skype group? Or do you mean as a recommendation thing?

Riot seems interesting. Fairly similar to Mumble, it appears.

Just as a general thing. I see tons of people listing skype usernames and asking people if they want to talk/stream/whatever on skype but skype is kind of a terrible tool for the job.

Yeah, I usually use skype, but the quality is pretty bad. I would use something different, unfortunately most people ared used to skype and using something different involves a lot of explanations lol, but I agree with Chira.

Why not? Skype is honestly painful to use. Every time I open the app on my phone I'm stuck staring at a white screen for at least 30-45 seconds before it even loads the conversation list, and it freezes again ("only" for about 5-10 seconds) every time you try to do anything. It's not just my phone, either, I've asked around and I've yet to find one person who doesn't have issues. Skype is just garbage, why wouldn't you move to something better?

Went ahead and made a channel for Heart2Heart with approval from Chira. You can find it here: https://riot.im/app/#/room/#heart2heart:matrix.org

Played around with it a bit, seems like it's focused mostly on group conversations in rooms but you can also take things to one on one chats where it's like Skype. So basically it's like a mix of Discord's rooms and Skype's calling. Haven't tried any of the audio/video calling features though, anyone else?

I just signed up for Riot (as tycos4). I agree Skype can be a handful at times, not working properly. Doesn't look like there's been much activity in the heart2h room yet. Hopefully we can try out the audio quality.

Discord is basically the only reliable option I've ever seen. Honestly there is no reason for using anything over it. I'd recommend that over anything else.
